Booted Up Barefoot: Karen McClamrock

Growing up in North Carolina, the winters were mild. We got snow only a few times a year, and I seldom wore a coat unless I was going to be outside for several hours. One  snowy winter day many years later, I saw my next door neighbor out on his porch having a smoke. He was an interesting computer geek guy and I wanted to take every opportunity to talk to him. I thought if I didn’t hurry, he might finish his smoke and go back inside because he did not like the cold nearly as much as I did. Right then and there I decided to make a bold move and walk over to his porch barefoot.  And hey! It wasn’t bad!

After that I began to walk barefoot in the snow a lot, to get the paper, to cook on the grill or chat with the neighbors. Once I walked barefoot across the street to see a friend. She was upstairs and did not hear me knock so I went back home.  Later her boyfriend was looking out a widow above her porch and saw my barefoot prints. He told my friend about them thinking she would be as shocked and amazed as he was. She just told him not to worry, that “it was only Karen and she does that all the time”.

I moved to a new house in March 2009. During my first winter here, we had several large snowfalls. I thought it only fitting and proper to carry on the barefoot tradition at this new house,  so I went out on my front walk and snapped this shot.
